I had planned a buffer day on each side, Friday to travel from home to Stratford-upon-Avon, day one for sightseeing and the play, day two for some other shakespeare related visits, and Monday to travel back home. That was the plan when I booked the ticket for the opening night of the Mad King. It just so happened that the week of the play was also the week of the move at work, and all hands at the infra side really needed to be on deck. Ok, no worries, let's just take out the Friday and Monday, which leaves us with one day to travel there, one day to travel back, and, aah, shoot.

I Just Walk

Sightseeing, aimless wandering, *aimful* wandering, urban hiking, the dérive, flâner, I'm not sure what to call it, because none of those fit. Ultimately, I just walk.
When I'm traveling on my own and I arrive in a city I spend a lot of time just walking it, sometimes with no specific goal, sometimes with a clear goal, and most often with goal that is just a thin excuse to walk. I often chastize myself for not doing more actual things. I tell myself I should plan more rather than walk the city aimlessly, but then I don't. The reason is simple, I like it.

Some time back I was traveling around some cities in Italy, (Torino, Milan, Firenze and Rome), and I ended up visiting both Michaelangelo's David as well as Bernini's David within a period of a week. I figured I would write up a quick comparison between the two. I'll be pulling from my journal extracts as well as some mastodon posts I made at the time.
The Two Davids
Michelangelo's statue of David, and his willy, is much bigger and more imposing in person than you can capture on photo. That's the first thing that struck me about the statue. It's massive.
